The Belmont Abbey men's lacrosse team defeated the Mars Hill Lions 17-0 in Mars Hill this afternoon, improving their record to 11-3. 37 seconds Mars Hill dropped to 3-10 on the year.
The Abbey scored early and often, as Callum Tanner found the back of the net just 37 seconds into the game on a man-up opportunity. Tanner was involved in the next two Abbey goals as he scored off a pass from Adam Wiedemann and then assisted on a Brian DePass goal for a 3-0 lead. With 1:45 remaining in the period, Wiedemann set up Connor Sellars for a 4-0 Crusader lead heading into the second quarter.
It only took a minute and a half into the second for Wiedemann to score off a pass from Sellars. Two minutes later, Sellars set up Wiedemann for a goal and a 6-0 lead. Just 1:12 later, Sellars scored a man-up goal on a pass from Kyle McGinley. Sellars handed out two more assists to Wiedemann before the period was up, and Thomas Farrell scored off a Wiedemann pass, and Belmont Abbey led 10-0 at halftime.
Tanner and Liam Osborne each scored in the first three minutes of the third to up the Abbey lead to 12-0. Tanner then scored a man-up goal at the 10:59 mark. Just 25 seconds later, Osborne set up Sellars for a 14-0 Crusader advantage. Scores by McGinley and Richard Fischer made it 16-0 heading into the final period.
Jason Hollister scored the lone Crusader goal of the fourth, as the Abbey sealed the 17-0 victory.
On the day, Tanner and Sellars led the Crusaders' offensive surge with four goals each. Wiedemann added three. He also handed out the most assists with five. Billy Huss led all players with seven ground balls. He also won 14 of the Abbey's 15 faceoffs won. The Lions won soc. Tanner added five ground balls, while Devin Cruz recorded four. Goalies Harley Whitham and Ryan McLoughlin recorded eight saves, as the Abbey's stubborn defense limited the Lions' shooting opportunities.
Next Saturday, April 23 the Crusaders will play their final home game of the regular season at Pfeiffer. The contest will begin at 1:00PM.
