The Belmont Abbey men's lacrosse team suffered a 12-7 loss to a highly ranked Mt. Olive Trojans team this afternoon. The loss moves the Abbey's record to 8-2 with a 2-1 record against conference opponents. Mt. Olive improved to 9-2 on the season and 3-0 in Conference Carolinas play.
After giving up two early goals, Belmont Abbey came back late in the opening quarter as Connor Sellars scored on a man-up opportunity and Callum Tanner scored just 39 seconds later to even the score at two. Mt. Olive scored a late-quarter goal to take a 3-2 lead into the second.
The Trojans scored early in the second, but Tanner again was able to answer with his own goal less than a minute later. With 3:52 in the quarter, Tanner scored his third goal of the day, this one immediately off a Trojan score. Brendan McGovern put a ball in the net with seven seconds in the half to pull the Crusaders within two as the Trojans led 7-5 at the half.
Adam Wiedemann scored the first goal of the second to make it a 7-6 Mt. Olive lead. It would be the only score of the quarter as both teams played solid defense.
After a Mt. Olive goal early in the fourth, Wiedemann scored his second goal of the game at the 7:24 mark to pull the Crusaders within one at 8-7. Unfortunately for the Abbey, it was the last goal it would score as it took a hard-fought 12-7 loss.
On the day, Tanner led the Crusaders' offense, as he found the back of the net three times on just four shots. Wiedemann scored twice.
Devin Cruz led the defensive effort with two caused turnovers and three ground balls. Justin Gibson also forced two Trojan turnovers. Billy Huss won nine faceoffs for Belmont Abbey. Goalie Harley Whitham earned nine saves.
The Crusaders will next the field Wednesday, April 6 at Coker, with a start time of 6:00PM.
