The men's lacrosse team earned a 9-5 victory this afternoon over the visiting Brevard Tornados. The win improves the Abbey's record to 4-1 on the year, while Brevard dipped to 0-5.
Belmont Abbey used a balanced offense, as Callum Tanner, Adam Wiedemann, and MJ Miller each scored two goals. Kyle McGinley contributed with a goal and three assists. Altogether, six Crusaders scored in today's game.
It took the Abbey's offense a little while to get going, but it scored three goals in the last 5:05 of the first quarter. At the end of the first the Abbey led 3-2.
It did not take long in the second for Belmont to get going. Wiedemann found the back of the net just a minute and a half into the quarter. Devin Cruz scored just 18 seconds later for a 5-2 Crusader advantage. Brevard scored the next two goals to pull within one. The Crusaders, however, scored three man-up goals in the last three minutes of the half to take a 8-4 lead going into the half.
The second half was mostly a defensive battle as neither team scored more than one goal. In the third quarter, each team took a total of four shots. Brevard only attempted three shots in the fourth. Belmont Abbey took more shots, but Brevard made more saves. It was not until 52 seconds remained in the game MJ Miller put a ball in the net to seal the 9-5 win for the Abbey.
Belmont Abbey's next stop will be a visit to Rollins next Thursday, March 10.
