13 different players scored goals as the Belmont Abbey men's lacrosse team powered ahead 12-1 at the half en route to a dominating 20-3 victory over the visiting Emmanuel Lions this afternoon at Alumni Field. Belmont Abbey improves to 8-4 overall and 1-3 in Conference Carolinas, while the Lions drop to 2-9 overall and 1-3 in league play.
Belmont Abbey never trailed as it stormed ahead 6-0 after one period. The tone was set early as Billy Huss won the game's opening faceoff, grabbed the ground ball, raced down the Lions zone and scored just seven seconds into the game.
The Abbey added six more goals in the second quarter and allowed one as the Crusaders cruised into halftime leading 12-1.
The two teams combined for five goals in the third quarter, as the Abbey scored three of those, but the Crusaders blanked the Lions in the final 15 minutes as they scored five times.
Every available player saw action and 13 of them scored, as Riley Quinlan and Hunter Jones both had three. Joey McGinley, Connor Sellars and Ryan Varner all netted two. Huss, Joey Long, Will Chastian, Liam Kircher, Jason Hollister, Nick Lasalla, Zack Bernhard and Billy Moore all scored once. Moore's goal was the highlight of the game, a behind the back strike with 11:18 left in the second quarter, taking pass from Varner.
McGinley and Max Becker each had two assists.
