Belmont Abbey senior Riley Quinlan led the Crusaders with three goals as the men's lacrosse team lost at the nationally second ranked Limestone Saints 18-8 this evening in Gaffney. The Saints improve to 11-1 overall and 3-0 in Conference Carolinas, while the Crusaders drop to 6-4 overall and 0-3 in league play.
Quinlan netted three goals, the first of which tied the game at one early in the first quarter, but the Saints closed the period with four unanswered strikes to take a 5-1 lead after one.
Limestone scored five goals in the second period, while the Crusaders scored twice, on markers from Joey McGinley and Quinlan, but Limestone carried a 10-4 lead into the break.
After Limestone outscored the Abbey 4-1 in the third period, Belmont Abbey and the Saints each scored four times in the final 15 minutes.
The Saints scored the first four, but the Crusaders closed the game with four unanswered, starting with a man up strike from Callum Tanner, followed by goals from McGinley, Nick Lasalla and Jason Hollister.
Quinlan scored three goals on three shots and added a ground ball. McGinley scored twice and added an assist. Devin Cruz and Harley Whitham both finished with six ground balls. Whitham made 13 saves in the cage.
Belmont Abbey is back in action April 9 when it hosts Queens.
