The 11th-ranked Mount Olive men's lacrosse team never trailed as it led 3-0 after one and never looked back in a 9-5 win over 15th-ranked Belmont Abbey this afternoon. The Trojans improve to 8-2 overall and 3-0 in Conference Carolinas, while the Abbey slips to 6-2 overall and 0-1 in league play.
Mount Olive led 6-3 at the half as the Trojans led 3-0 after one quarter. Both teams scored three times in the second quarter, but the Crusaders could only get to as close as two at 5-3. Mount Olive punctuated the half with a goal at the one second mark to carry a 6-3 lead into the break.
The Trojans Ryan Morris scored the only goal of the third quarter to give Mount Olive a 7-3 lead heading into the last period.
There, the Trojans scored the first two goals of the period to extend their lead to 9-3. Belmont Abbey capped the game with two goals, a Jason Hollister marker with 2:19 left and Riley Quinlan's goal with 13 seconds left.
Mount Olive goalkeeper Ross Bowman made 17 saves, including seven in the third quarter on nine Crusader shots. Harley Whitham made nine saves.
Devin Cruz caued four Trojans turnovers and scooped up five ground balls.
Mount Olive outshot the Crusaders 35-34 and won ten of 17 face offs.
