ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- Junior Nick Stafford fired a five-under 67, including a 31 on the back nine that featured birdies on five of his last seven holes, to claim individual honors at the Barton Invitational. The South Point High School graduate birdied 10, 11, 12, 14 and 16 on his way to the victory, his second of the fall.
Belmont Abbey entered two teams in the small field, which changed dramatically after Hurricane Matthew forced a venue change from Cutter Creek Golf Club to Northgreen Country Club. Stafford helped his group of five to a second-place finish at 584 (296-288), while a second team of Crusaders tied for fourth at 619 (316-303). Barton won the tournament with a score of 570.
Following Stafford, Parker See finished fourth with a score of one-under 143 (72-71) while John Molyneaux placed 16th at 152 (79-73). Michael Mead tied for 20th at 156 (79-77), while Levi Kettlehut finished 24th at 159 (76-83).
Maurizio Debono led the second group of golfers with a tie for ninth (74-76=150), while Chris Kopack tied for 17th at 155 (80-75). Brody Davis (t20/81-75=156) and Austin Gliha (26th/81-81=162). Jacob Scruggs did not compete on Monday, but helped the team score on Tuesday with a 77.
