Kooistra Takes First at N.C. State Race Weekend

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Jesse Kooistra captured first place in the Men's A Race and several Crusaders won breakaway sprints during action at the N.C. State Race Weekend cycling event Saturday and Sunday.

Kooistra won a breakaway to the finish with two other riders to claim first. Keith Mullalyy won the field sprint with protection from Trey Hedgecock to finish fourth in the race.

In the Men's C race, Luke Richards and Curtis Hoyt placed fourth and fifth, respectively, after taking the top two spots in the field sprint, the sprint of riders who did not make the breakaway.

On Sunday, Richards picked up his first career win in the Men's C Criterium, while Mullally was second in the Men's A Criterium. Hedgecock placed ninth with Kooistra finishing 15th. Mullally was edged out in an eight-rider breakaway, while Hedgecock won the the field sprint.

"We had a great start to our collegiate road season, taking wins in both the A and C category races," Head Coach Kyle Knott said. "The team worked well together to support our top riders for each race. I would like to congratulate Jesse on our program's first road win and Luke on winning his first race as a cyclist. Conference rankings should come out shortly, but with Keith's consistency he should be in contention for the conference lead."
