CENTRAL, S.C. -- Senior Deion Lane led four Crusaders in double figures with 17 points, lifting Belmont Abbey to a 76-67 victory over Southern Wesleyan Saturday afternoon in Conference Carolinas men's basketball action Saturday afternoon.
Dj Dobson of Southern Wesleyan led all scorers with 30 points, tied for the most by any opponent all season long.
Trailing 22-21 with 8:24 left in the first half, the Crusaders (9-10, 4-5)outscored the Warriors 13-4 over the next four minutes and never trailed again. LJ McCoy started the run with a three-pointer, then hit another after an SWU basket had tied the game at 24-all. A 7-0 run capped the rally with Richard, Abrom and Lane each hitting layups before a John Bowen free throw made the score 34-2 with 3:46 to play.
Southern Wesleyan (2-16, 1-8) scored the final four points of the first half and trailed by only five, 39-34, at the break.
In the second half, the Warriors cut the lead to two on two separate occasions, but Belmont Abbey had an answer each time. A 9-0 run pushed a 47-45 lead to 11 points, 56-45 at the 12:43 mark, then a 10-1 surge -- started with six consecutive points -- sent the lead back to 11 from 64-62 to 74-63.
After playing its last three games on the road, Belmont Abbey returns home Tuesday to face Limestone in a matchup of two teams fighting for postseason positioning.
