Mount Olive shot 59 percent from the floor, including 70 percent in the first half, as the Trojans earned a 102-76 men's basketball victory this evening in Kornegay Arena. Mount Olive earns a season sweep of the series as it moves to 11-7 overall and 6-4 in Conference Carolinas, while the Abbey drops to 6-12 overall and 3-8 in Conference Carolinas.
Mount Olive never trailed as it shot 70 percent in the first half. The percentage was 88.2 percent with nine minutes to play in the period as the Trojans built a 60-42 halftime lead. Mount Olive converted 21-30 from the field and 7-12 from three point range. Belmont Abbey shot 37 percent in the first half and made five of nine from beyond the arc.
The second half was much closely played as the Trojans cooled to 48 percent shooting with the Abbey totaling 39 percent. Mount Olive outscored the Abbey 42-34 in the final 20 minutes.
Freshman guard Ben Ferguson led all scorers with a career-high 22 points on 8-15 shooting, including 6-11 from three point range. Deion Lane added 20 points and nine rebounds and Ray Chen contributed 14 points.
The Crusaders finished with 38 percent shooting (19-50) from the floor including 10-23 from three point range.
The two teams combined to attempt 83 free throws, with Belmont Abbey finishing 28-45 from the line and Mount Olive was 24-38.
