SAVANNAH, GA. – The Belmont Abbey baseball team captured its 26th win of the season as it defeated Armstrong State 7-3 Tuesday afternoon. Josh Genthe went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and Matt McGarry drove in three runs for the Crusaders. The Abbey is now 26-15 on the season. The Pirates fall to 16-21.
Griffin Baker got the start for the Crusaders as he tossed 5.0 innings, allowing just two runs on one hit, and striking out six batters for his second win of the year. Three Crusaders recorded multi-hit games with Nick Beinlich and Luke Cureton each notching two hits.
Belmont Abbey scored in the first inning when Colin Rosenbaum put a ball in play, scoring McGarry. Armstrong State answered in the bottom of the first when Will Browning worked a bases loaded walk. The Pirates then took the lead in the second when Tray Roberts scored on a fielder's choice.
The Crusaders tied it up in the third when McGarry lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Genthe to score. In the fifth, The Abbey seized the lead scoring three runs on two doubles. After a lead-off walk by Genthe, Nick Beinlich doubled to right field and McGarry managed another sacrifice fly. Rosenbaum ripped a ball to short, which scored Beinlich, and Luke Cureton doubled down the right-field line. Kevin Elefante put a ball in play to the shortstop allowing Rosenbaum to score. The Crusaders led 5-2 after the fifth inning.
The Pirates answered with a run in the seventh, after two singles, then Chandler Corley hit into a fielder's choice that scored Tray Roberts. That was all the offense Crusader pitching would allow as they would only give up one more hit in the contest.
Belmont Abbey scored twice more in the eighth when Genthe came home on a passed ball and McGarry singled in Beinlich.
Belmont Abbey will host Lander, Tuesday, April 18, at 6:00 P.M.
