Seven Run First Inning Propels Crusaders Over Saints

BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey baseball team exploded for 10 hits in the first inning to capture the first game of the conference series against Limestone. The Crusaders platted seven runs in the first en route to a 12-2 victory over the Saints.  The Abbey had four players with multi-hit games as Nick Nunziato went 3-for-5 and Nick Beinlich, Matt McGarry, and Kennan Stanley each had two hits.

Beinlich and Nunziato each had two RBI and Stanley drove in four runs on the night. Cameron Busby tossed 8.0 innings to earn his fourth win of the season. Busby only gave up two runs on eight hits, not surrendering a walk, and striking out six batters.

Beinlich got the party started as he led off the first with his 15th home run of the season off the right-field foul pole. McGarry followed with a double and Nunziato singled before Kayden Krause recorded an RBI single. Luke Cureton doubled in Nunziato and Kennan Stanley launched a three-run homer to left-center, giving The Abbey a six run advantage after just seven batters. Colin Rosenbaum registered an RBI single to round out the first inning scoring.

The Saints got a run back in the third after two hits but the Crusaders answered with two runs in the fourth.  Nunziato notched a two-run double into right field to increase the lead to 9-1.

The two clubs traded runs in the fifth with the Saints scoring after a double and two groundouts and the Crusaders taking advantage of a sacrifice fly off the bat of Beinlich.

The Crusaders added two more insurance runs in the sixth to seal the deal.

The Abbey will celebrate their seniors tomorrow before they host Limestone for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
