BURLINGTON, NC - A three run first for the Mount Olive Trojans aided the cause of Bruce Zimmerman, who tossed seven innings en route to his eighth win of the season, as Mount Olive defeated Belmont Abbey 7-2 in Day one of the 2016 Conference Carolinas Baseball Championships at Burlington Athletic Stadium on Thursday.
Matt Davenport toes the slab for the Abbey, suffering his second setback of the year.
In the first, Mount Olive would get RBI hits from Jack Sherrill, Joe Koehler and David Mayo to stake Zimmerman to the early advantage.
The Crusaders would scratch out ten hits against Zimmerman, but only two hits were for extra bases, with Clarke's hit being the only one with runners in scoring position.
The Abbey would have a chance to tie the contest in the seventh, as Matt McGarry launched a ball to left for his second homer of the year to trim the lead to 4-2.
Zimmerman would go seven frames, striking out ten, before handing the ball over to Dario Santangelo in the eighth.
Santangelo would complete the final two innings, with only two hits allowed on the day.
The Trojans padded the lead with homers from Brett Lang and Stephen Wallace in the ninth to stretch the gap to 7-2.
McGarry and Krause joined Clarke with multi hit days for the Abbey, as the Crusaders will look to avoid elimination tomorrow against the winner of Erskine- Pfeiffer. Tomorrow's game will begin at three, with airtime on BASN at 2:45pm.
