The Belmont Abbey baseball team lost both games of a Conference Carolinas doubleheader against Barton Sunday afternoon at Abbey Yard, losing the opener 13-9 and falling 10-6 in the nightcap. Barton improves to 13-21 overall and 5-6 in league play, while Belmont Abbey drops to 13-21 overall and 4-10 in Conference Carolinas.
Barton moved ahead 4-1 in the seven inning opener, plating one in the first and three more in the second, but the Abbey cut the lead in half in the second as Kennan Stanley doubled home Weston Clarke, followed by Craig Zalewa's RBI single that plated Lorenzo Wright.
The Bulldogs added four more in the third and two in the fourth to stretch their lead to 10-2, but the Crusaders mounted a rally in the bottom of the fourth with five runs to slash the Barton lead to 10-7.
Stanley opened the scoring with an RBI single, plating Wright. Stanley then came around to score on Conor Kwalwasser's double. Ian Vazquez followed with a double that scored Kwalwsser and Zalewa. Vazquez later scored on a wild pitch.
Barton answered the Abbey's charge with three runs in the sixth to move ahead 13-7. Belmont Abbey responded with two in the sixth as Kwalwasser scored on an error. Anthony Dimino drove in the final run as his single scored Wright.
Mike Brienza, the second of three Barton pitchers, earned the win as he surrendered two unearned runs in two innings, striking out two and walking one. He gave up three hits. Belmont Abbey starter Parks Smithey took the loss after yielding eight runs on six hits in two and two-thirds innings, striking out three.
In the nightcap, which was a full nine inning game, Barton scored two in the first but the Abbey pulled one back in the second on Levi Wright's solo homer.
Barton answered with two runs in the third to pull out to a 4-1 lead, but the Abbey plated one in the bottom of the frame as Clarke singled home Lorenzo Wright.
A three run Barton fourth extended the Bulldogs lead to 7-2, but Kwalwasser made it 7-3 in the bottom of the frame as his single scored Quinn Hawksworth.
That was all of the scoring until the sixth as Barton used an RBI double and a two run homer to move ahead 10-3.
In the bottom of the inning the Abbey scored twice as Jon Pilla scored on a strikeout/passed ball, while Dimino's sacrifice fly was deep enough to score Kwalwasser.
Two innings later the Abbey closed the scoring as Lorenzo Wright's double chased home Vazquez.
Barton's Zach Breen earned the win in relief for the Bulldogs. The second of four Barton pitchers, Breen allowed two unearned runs on two hits, striking out four.
Abbey starter Cody Stull was saddled with the loss after giving up ten runs, nine earned, on 14 hits in five innings. He fanned four.
The two teams will wrap up the series Monday afternoon at 2:30.
