BELMONT, N.C. -- Mackenzie Chrapliwy tallied 13 kills and only three errors and Brianna Morgheim added 11 kills, leading Belmont Abbey to a 3-1 (25-23, 25-12, 22-25, 26-24) victory over Lees-McRae in Conference Carolinas women's volleyball action Saturday afternoon. The Crusaders quickly took the first two games, but then had to fight off the Bobcats (1-9, 0-3) to win for the fourth time in five matches.
Belmont Abbey (7-4, 3-1) started to pull away in the middle of the first set, scoring five straight points to open a 13-7 lead. The score was 22-14 when LMC started to close the gap, using five straight points to start a 7-1 run that made the score 23-21. However, a kill by Carie Valentine and an attack error gave the Crusaders the 25-21 win.
The Crusaders dominated the second set by hitting .350 and limited Lees-McRae to a-.174 attack percentage. Five straight points and nine of 10 turned a 10-8 lead into double digits, 19-9. The set ended 25-12 on a Morgheim kill. The Bobcats would not quit, though, hanging tough throughout the third set. They led 14-11 after a 7-1 run, but later tailed 22-20. However, LMC scored the final five points of the set, three on Belmont Abbey attack errors to trim the match to 2-1 with the 25-22 win.
The match seemed to be headed to a fifth set before some Crusader heroics. They trailed 18-14 closing to 19-18 on another Morgheim kill. Lees-McCrae answered with five of the next seven points to hold five match points, but The Abbey rallied. A kill by Lexi Henriott brought Kenney to serve and she responded with six straight points, starting with an ace. Lanie Healey had two kills in the run, while Henriott added another. An attack error by LMC ended the match 26-24.
Belmont Abbey hits the road on Tuesday for a non-conference tilt at Coker.
