Derek Dalzell, a successful coach in the private sector, is in his first season as Head Men's and Women's Cycling Coach at Belmont Abbey. He was named the second coach in the program's history effective August 1.

"We are pleased to announce the hire of Derek Dalzell as our Head Women's and Men's Cycling Coach," Miss said. "While engaging in what was a comprehensive and international search, Coach Dalzell emerged as uniquely qualified not only as a student and teacher of his chosen sport but, more importantly, as a mentor for the young women and young men who participate in our Cycling program. We believe wholeheartedly that Derek will contribute significantly in enabling us BOTH to build on the success achieved during last year's inaugural campaign AND to nurture our students in their formation and development so as to ensure that each realizes her/his full potential and that all become great blessings to themselves and to others."

Dalzell coached over 80 elite athletes as the founder and owner of Dalzell Coaching, LLC. In that role, he worked with a variety of clients, ranging across various age groups and talent levels from beginner to elite. He served as a brand ambassador for several sponsors while using social media to both attract new clients and maximize the training regimens of current ones.

Additionally, Dalzell served as Director of Athletic Performance for Mind Right Endurance, where he oversaw coaches and athlete development. He utilizes a variety of software programs to ensure success, while also assisting in the administration of the company, including the securing of sponsorships.

Dalzell holds a USA Cycling Level III certification and participates in beginning races. He played collegiate baseball at Centenary College, earning a degree in geology in 2011. After working with the City of Shreveport (La.) Parks and Recreation Division for a year, he returned to school at Western Michigan to earn master's degrees in coaching sport performance and sport management in 2015 and 2016, respectively.

Dalzell is married to the former Millicent Davis and is originally from Bay City, Mich.
