CENTRAL, S.C. -- Freshman Julian Smallwood captured the shotput title at the 2017 Conference Carolinas Men's Track and Field Championships on Saturday, highlighting an day of outstanding efforts by Belmont Abbey student-athletes.
Smallwood posted a throw of 15.42 meters on his third, and last, attempt of the final. He threw 14.64 in the preliminaries, which had him ranked second overall.His finals distance set new Conference Carolinas Championship and Belmont Abbey school records.
Tomas Cerdeiras finished fifth in the pole vault, clearing 3.30 meters before missing at 3.45 meters. Later, he placed seventh in the 400m hurdles, covering the distance in 58.43 seconds. Michael Koceja placed fifth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 56.46 seconds, while Matthew Difrancesco was fourth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.05 seconds.
Finally, the relay team of Koceja, Cerdeiras, Difrancesco and Alex Abalos finished fourth at 3:20.11.
The meet concludes the 2017 season for Belmont Abbey. Smallwood previously met the provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA Division II Championship and will be in consideration for an invitation to that competition.
