CENTRAL, S.C. - The Belmont Abbey Men's Outdoor Track & Field team competed at the Susan Rouse Invitational this weekend, hosted by Southern Wesleyan University.
The team had some excellent results in the sprint events. Sophomore Matthew Difrancesco came in second place in the 200 meters, clocking a time of 21.91 seconds. The 4x400 Relay team also did a fantastic job, as it came in second place, with a 3:24.72 race. That race was featured by Difrancesco, Michael Koceja, Aspen Dillard, and Alex Abalos. That same group also competed in the 4x100M relay, where it also finished in second place. Koceja made a top-3 finish in the 400m hurdles, and second among NCAA runners, which he ran in 54.89 seconds. Abalos ran the 400m in 50.86 seconds, good enough for a sixth-place finish.
As for the distance running, junior Patrick Lester made a top-10 finish in the 800M, which he completed in 2:03.98.
The Crusaders also had some impressive field event performances, highlighted by freshman Julian Smallwood finishing in the top spot overall in the shotput. His throw went 15.35 meters. Freshman Aspen Dillard also had a top overall finish in the High Jump, as he had a 1.85m leap. In the long jump, Difrancesco finished in second place with a 6.07m jump. Not far behind him was Andrew Bryant, also in the top 10, with a jump of 5.36m.
Belmont Abbey will next compete on Saturday, April 22, in Columbia, SC in the Gamecock Invitational. That meet will be hosted by the University of South Carolina.
