Quick Start Leads Men's Soccer to 4-1 Victory

BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey men's soccer team tallied another four-goal performance as they defeated the Shaw Bears 4-1 Wednesday. The Crusaders have now registered four goals in all three games this season, as they improve to 3-0.

The Abbey wasted no time at the start of the contest, scoring in just under three minutes. Juan Villa's shot rebounded to the foot of Aaron Madison, who sent it in for his third goal of the season. Just two minutes later, Juan Villa took advantage of an excellent throw-in from Steven Pate, pushing it by the keeper for the early 2-0 advantage.

In the 13th minute, Nando Morales placed an excellent cross in front of the goal for Mark Trompeter's second score of the year. In the 17th minute Josh Irons placed his first goal of the season after George Espina found him darting to the goal.

Thilo Wilke put Shaw on the board in the 74th minute after a foul in the box granted a Bears' penalty kick.

On the afternoon, the Crusaders outshot the Bears 24-15 with Shaw's keepers, Santiago Farre and Mynor Martinez, combining for seven saves. Wes Holifield recorded four saves and Evan Morrow tallied two for The Abbey.

The Crusaders will travel to Southern Wesleyan to open their Conference Carolinas schedule Saturday at 7 p.m.
