UNC Pembroke scored two first half goals as the Braves, ranked seventh regionally, earned a 2-0 victory this evening over Belmont Abbey in a Southeast Region matchup. UNC Pembroke improves to 4-2-1, while the Crusaders fall to 1-5-0.
Scoreless for 26 minutes, the Braves broke through at the 27:13 mark as Josh Phelps found the back of the net for the first time this season, taking a service from Tom Potter and beating Luke Whelan from the top of the box. Tyler Santee was credited with the secondary assist.
14 minutes later, shortly before half, Potter set up Ryan Thompson's first goal of the year. Thompson cleaned up a rebound off of Potter's saved shot to increase the Braves lead to 2-0.
UNC Pembroke outshot the Abbey 16-7. Belmont Abbey did hold a 3-2 edge in corner kicks. Whelan made three saves.
Belmont Abbey is back in action Saturday at 4:00 when it welcomes Emmanuel to Alumni Field in the Conference Carolinas home opener.
