The Belmont Abbey men's soccer team closed out the 2014 home schedule with a 3-1 loss to the visiting Pfeiffer Falcons this afternoon at Alumni Field. Pfeiffer improves to 14-4-0 overall and 8-2-0 in Conference Carolinas, while the Abbey slips to 4-8-4 overall and 2-6-2 in Conference Carolinas.
The Crusaders maintained their lead through the first half but the Falcons scored three goals in the second half, all by Roberto Soares.
The first goal came just 1:11 into the second half as Soares headed home a corner kick to the near post. Nine minutes later, Soares struck again, sending a free kick around the left side of the wall and tucking it inside the left post for a 2-1 lead.
He added an insurance tally in the 63rd minute as his shot was deflected by a Crusaders defender past Luke Whelan and into the net for the final goal of the match.
The Falcons outshot the Abbey 13-6 and attempted nine corner kicks to just four for the Crusaders. Whelan stopped three shots.
Belmont Abbey will open the 2014 Conference Carolinas Tournament on the road Monday. The Crusaders will face either Limestone or Pfeiffer.
