Belmont Abbey junior midfielder Declan McQuillan netted the lone Crusaders goal as the men's soccer team lost 3-1 at King this afternoon in a Conference Carolinas matchup. The Tornado improve to 4-2-0 overall and 2-0-0 in league play, while the Abbey slips to 2-4-2 overall and 1-2-0 in Conference Carolinas.
King's Chris Hicks scored all three of the Tornado's goals, as his first came in the eighth minute, followed by another in the 18th minute.
Seven minutes later, the Crusaders cut the lead in half as the Abbey's two Ireland natives teamed up to score in the 26th minute.
Jordan Gardner, who earlier lofted a 25-yard free kick off the crossbar, forced a turnover in the King end and fed a sprinting McQuillan, who beat Kari Sveinsson lower right for his second goal of the year.
The match remained a one goal affair until Hicks bagged the insurance goal in the 58th minute to seal the win.
King outshot the Crusaders 21-8 and held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
