Belmont Abbey junior midfielder Jordan Gardner scored his first career goal with a thrilling rainbow from just inside the halfway line to allow the Crusaders men's soccer team to earn a 1-1 draw at NCAA Division I member Davidson College this evening. Belmont Abbey is now 0-1-2, while Davidson's mark stands at 2-0-2.
The match was stopped in the 78th minute due to severe weather. Under NCAA rules, once a match reaches the 70th minute it is declared official and all stats and score is counted.
After a scorless first half, Gardner gave the fans a thrill as he scored his first career goal from 45 yards out. Pressuring the Wildcats in their own end, a Crusader forward forced a hurried Davidson clear, which came right to the feet of the Dublin, Ireland product, who one-timed the ball over the head of Davidson goalkeeper Andrew Kenneson. Kennesson came off his line and could only watch as the ball dropped just underneath the crossbar and tucked inside the right post at the 53:10 mark.
The Crusaders held their lead until the 77:17 mark when the Wildcats gained the equalizer. After that goal, the match was stopped due to severe weather and was never resumed.
Davidson outshot the Abbey 14-13 and posted an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks.
