The Belmont Abbey Women's Bowling team competed in its inaugural tournament in the Southern Collegiate Classic this weekend. The men also bowled in this tournament, which was held in Marietta, GA. The women finished in 24th place overall, while the men took 29th.
The Southern Collegiate Classic is classified as a Tier 1 Tournament, which means it attracts a lot of the top bowling teams in the country. After the first round, the Crusaders were ahead of Webber International, which is one of the more established bowling teams.
In the final day, each team bowled a series called Baker games, in which each individual only bowls two frames per game.
When asked for his thoughts on the weekend, head Coach Clyde Ferguson stated: "Our women were competing in their first outing as collegiate student-athletes. They started out well, and after a few rounds of adversity, our senior captain Carli Albrecht, pulled the team together in the final day and helped the team finish strong."
Coach Ferguson also commented on the men's performance: "The men, in their second outing as collegiate student-athletes, were very impressive against seasoned collegiate teams. One of our JV Players, Malik Myers, was particularly impressive, scoring in the tournament's top third overall. It was a very tough tournament and not one player ever gave up. They maintained their positions throughout the opening rounds, and showed tremendous strength, bowling their strongest rounds at the end."
The men finished in front of multiple Division 1 schools, including Central Florida, Louisiana-Lafayette, Northern Kentucky, The University of Florida, and Indiana State. Both teams will next compete in the Roto Grip Classic on November 13 in Beavercreek, OH.
