BELMONT, N.C. -- DeQuan Abrom tallied 22 points and Jacob Wilson added 21 points and a team-best seven rebounds lifting Belmont Abbey to an 80-66 Conference Carolinas victory over Southern Wesleyan Saturday night at the Wheeler Center.
The Crusaders (6-5, 2-1) never trailed in the contest after Wilson hit a pair of three-pointers around a Warrior layup for a 6-2 lead in the first two minutes. The Abbey put the game away late in the first half when it used a 21-5 run over a nine-minute span to turn a 16-12 advantage into a 20-point lead, 37-17.
In the second half, the margin reached 24 points at its greatest, 67-43 at the 6:18 mark, but Southern Wesleyan (1-9, 0-3) chipped it down to 12 with just over a minute remaining.
Belmont Abbey outshot the Warriors 47.5 percent to 36.9 percent and had three fewer turnovers, but SWU claimed a 41-37 advantage on the boards.
The Crusaders take a week off for Fall Semester final exams before closing out the pre-Christmas slate next Saturday at King.
