GAFFNEY, S.C. -- DeQuan Abrom scored a career-high 32 points on 14 of 19 shooting, but it was not enough as Belmont Abbey dropped an 82-66 decision to Wingate Saturday in the second game of the SAC/Conference Carolinas Challenge. Abrom added a team-high seven rebounds, four steals and two assists to his totals.
Jacob Wilson also reached double figures in scoring with 13 points, while Devarious Christian led five Bulldogs in double figures with 16.
Belmont Abbey started strong, opening leads of 9-0 and 15-5 in the first 6:12, but Wingate (1-1) answered with a 13-3 run to even the score at 18. After a jumper by Aidan Richard, the Bulldogs tallied six in a row to grab their first advantage, 24-20. They stretched the margin to seven, 39-32, by intermission.
Wingate came out firing in the second period, outscoring the Crusaders 12-4 in the first four minutes-plus and never saw the lead dip below double figures the rest of the contest.
Belmont Abbey shot just 44.3 percent overall in the contest, making just three of 20 three-point attempts. The Crusaders were also outrebounded 40-29.
The Crusaders continue their season-opening three-game road swing on Wednesday at North Georgia.
