GAFFNEY, S.C. -- DeQuan Abrom scored 25 points and Deion Lane posted a double-double of 15 points and 14 rebounds, leading Belmont Abbey to a season-opening 92-83 victory over Mars Hill in the SAC/Conference Carolinas Challenge.
After falling behind 6-0 in the first 1:10, Belmont Abbey tied the game at 12 with a 10-4 run. After a Mars Hill layup, Abrom converted a conventional three-point play to give The Abbey its first lead, 15-14 at the 15:47 mark. Mars Hill led 27-24 at the 10:21 mark when the Crusaders took the lead for good with a 9-0 run, capped by a Wilson three-pointer. The Lions closed to within 35-32 before seven straight by the Belmont Abbey pushed the lead to double digits, 42-32. The Crusaders held a slim 44-42 advantage at the break, hitting 54.8 percent from the field in the period.
The Crusaders started the second half with an 11-2 run and led by no less than five after that. Leading 71-65 with 8:20 to play, they went on another 11-2 run for a 15-point spread, 82-67, with 4:29 to play.
For the contest, Belmont Abbey hit 53.3 percent and had a 40-28 advantage on the boards.
The SAC/Conference Carolinas Challenge continues tomorrow when the Crusaders face Wingate at 5:30.
