CONWAY, Ark. -- Mia Maminski scored with 8:51 left in double-overtime, lifting Belmont Abbey to a 3-2 victory in field hockey action Friday night. The game marked the first time in the two-year history of the program that two 7-on-7, 15-minute, sudden-victory periods were needed after regulation.
Maminski knocked in a rebound of a Xanthe Rademeyer shot on a short corner to break the deadlock and end the contest. Kayley Williams scored twice on short corner restarts by Nicole Wong, while Paige Hinds had five saves in goal for the Crusaders (5-2).
Hendrix (2-3) opened the scoring with a goal at the 12:30 mark of the first period, but Williams evened the score exactly 12 minutes later. The score remained 1-1 until the 52:27 mark when Williams and Wong repeated their corner success. The Warriors forced the overtimes when Nadine Matena tallied her second goal of the game with 10:16 left in regulation.
The Crusaders had a 19-11 advantage in shots during the contest, including taking all four shot attempts in the second overtime. The Abbey also held a 13-6 edge in penalty corners.
Belmont Abbey continues its road trip tomorrow morning with an 11 a.m. (CT) start at Rhodes.
