CHEERLEADING CLAIMS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The Belmont Abbey Cheerleading Team ended its first season as a competitive sport with a bang Friday night, claiming the national championship in its division at The Cheer LTD. CANAM competition.

The Crusaders placed first in the All Girl Small College Division, with no deductions in the categories of Safety rules, Falls & Errors, Timing, Choreography & Music, Sportsmanship and Interruption of Performance.

The Abbey scored highest in the voice category with 9.0 out of 10. It tallied 7.0 out of 10 in Execution of Stunts & Tosses, Pyramids and Choreography & Impression.

A total of 37 collegiate teams competed in eight divisions.
