Baseball Faces Wingate at NCAA Southeast Regional

BELMONT, N.C. -- The Belmont Abbey baseball team begins its quest for the 2018 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship on Thursday when it begins play at the Southeast Regional. The third-seeded Crusaders will face No. 6 Wingate at 11 a.m. in the opener of the tournament which is being hosted in Tigerville, S.C. by No. 1 seed North Greenville.

The other teams in the regional are No. 2 seed Georgia College, No. 4 seed Columbus State, No. 5 seed UNC-Pembroke and No. 7 seed Lincoln Memorial.
 
Belmont Abbey finished the regular-season with a 37-12 record, reaching as high as a No. 2 national ranking in March. The Crusaders were third in the Conference Carolinas' regular-season standings before posting a 1-2 mark at the league tournament. Five players were named first-team all-conference with Luke Cureton earning Player of the Year recognition.
 
During the regular season, The Abbey won both contests against Wingate -- 5-4 on the road on Feb. 20 and 10-5 at home on March 7.
 
Belmont Abbey is making its sixth appearance in the Division II Championship, holding an 8-10 overall record. Previous appearances came in 1968, 2001, 2008, 2009 and 2016. The Crusaders' best finish came in 2009, when they won the Southeast Regional, then finished third overall at the College World Series in Cary, N.C.
