BELMONT, N.C. – The No. 14 Belmont Abbey baseball team took their sixth conference series as they split Saturday's doubleheader with Barton. The Bulldogs took game one 5-6 and the Crusaders captured game two 7-3 as The Abbey improves to 33-9 on the season with a 16-4 Conference Carolinas record. Barton is now 12-32 overall and 4-16 in league play.
Barton jumped out to a 6-0 lead after scoring three runs in the second, one in the fourth, and two in the fifth. The Crusaders were able to get on the board in the fifth when AJ Hendricks doubled in Jakob Rolly and Luke Cureton singled in Nick Beinlich. Belmont Abbey scored two more runs on the sixth on Rolly's two-run homer. Cureton homered to lead off the seventh but The Abbey wasn't able to complete the comeback as Barton took the 5-6 win.
Griffin Baker started for the Crusaders going 3.2 innings allowing four runs on six hits, walking one and striking out five in his first loss of the year. Trent Fennell captured his sixth win of the season tossing 5.0 innings allowing two runs on four hits, walking four and recording seven strikeouts.
Game two saw more Belmont Abbey offense as they scored three runs in the second inning coming from a home run by Kevin Elefante and a double by Colin Rosenbaum. Matt McGarry singled to drive in a run in the third and Elefante drove in two runs in the fourth with a single through the left side.
Barton took three runs back in the fifth after two run-scoring doubles but Beinlich added some insurance in the bottom of the fifth with a home run to right-center field.
Robert Frantzis earned his first win of the year with his two innings of relief. Barton starter Alex Hart was given his seventh loss of the season after going 1.2 innings.
Belmont Abbey will travel to Lander Tuesday to take on the Bearcats at 6 P.M. Tuesday.
