BELMONT, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey field hockey team recorded its third straight shutout and four different players tallied goals as the Crusaders defeated Coker 4-0 Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The field hockey program celebrated seven seniors in a pregame ceremony. They are as follows: Cecilia Müller,
Grace Hines,
Katie Cole,
Taryn Sabia,
Jillian Cain,
Margaret Malcolm and
Hailey Leatherman.
Additionally, the Crusaders clinched at least a home game in the upcoming South Atlantic Conference Tournament. With the win, Belmont Abbey improves to 8-4 overall and 7-2 in SAC play. Coker is now 2-12 overall, 2-6 in the league.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sarah Schumacher took the first shot of the game for the Abbey just over midway through the first quarter.
- After Schumacher's shot was saved in the first quarter, Isabel Stankiewicz got the Abbey on the board with her second goal of the season to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead.
- Katie Cole scored her first career goal in the second quarter off an assist from Chloe Kiser to make it 2-0.
- Kiser recorded her team-best seventh assist of the season.
- Avery Bourke scored her third goal of the year late in the second quarter.
- Jillian Cain capped the scoring with less than five minutes remaining in the third quarter.
- Belmont Abbey outshot Coker 24-3 and 16-1 in shots on goal.
- The Crusaders also had 15 penalty corners on the day.
- Lily Willard and Annmarie Mullen each combined for the shutout playing one half. Willard made the lone save of the day in the first half.
UP NEXT
- The Crusaders host Converse for their final home game of the regular season Tuesday at Alumni Field.
- The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start and it is considered a nonconference game.
