Justin Bates begins his third year as Assistant Athletics Director for Facility Operations, overseeing all scheduling and maintenance for Belmont Abbey's athletic facilities. He is also responsible capital improvements, camps, special events and game management.
A member of the wrestling team at Belmont Abbey during his college days, Bates comes back to Belmont after spending two years as the Assistant Camp Director at Camp Cayuga in Peapack, N.J. While there, he oversaw over 60 activity sites, managed 120-160 instructors and supervisors and scheduled athletic tournaments and games both home and away against other camps in the area.
Prior to his appointment at Camp Cayuga, Bates served as the Assistant Athletics Director at Gaston Day School for the 2012-13 school year. He assisted the department with all administrative roles and also served as the assistant boys' basketball coach.
A 2012 Belmont Abbey graduate with a degree in sport management, Bates competed on the wrestling team for one season before transitioning to a student coach position. He assisted with The Abbey's bid effort to host the 2014 Div. II National Wrestling Tournament and utilized social media networking to increase program awareness and increase home match attendance. He also assisted the department in sports information. His service was recognized with the 2012 Larry Reidy Award, presented annually to the student who has displayed outstanding service to the athletic department.
Bates is currently pursuing a master's degree in sport management from Western Carolina.
