Brian Rushing is in his sixth year on the athletics staff as the Director of Athletics Marketing and Broadcasting, but he is certainly no stranger to the Crusaders. He started as the as the public address voice at the Wheeler Center in 2006.
In his time at the Abbey, Rushing has developed the Belmont Abbey Sports Network, covering numerous sports on the conference-wide Ustream platform. He has steadily grown the network's list of sponsors, including the agreement with OrthoCarolina that produces the postgame show for 10 sports. Rushing has broadcast NCAA tourney action for the Crusaders in volleyball, soccer, basketball and baseball, including more 300 regular-season matchups and coaches’ shows. Rushing serves as emcee and producer of the yearly Sports Awards Banquet on top of his service to the Sports Hall of Fame during Homecoming Weekend.
in 2016, Rushing joined with Head Golf Coach Jason Gault to establish the Hampton Inn by Hilton/ Belmont Abbey Athletics Golf Classic, an annual golf event that will serve as the kickoff fundraiser for the upcoming year. In addition to the title sponsorship of Hampton Inn by Hilton, many businesses partnered with the Abbey in the inaugural event including: PNC Bank, Chandler Hahn State Farm Insurance, Sun Drop/Choice USA, Hardee’s and Frank’s Heating and Air.
He has created the REDucation Day promotion with public and private schools from Cleveland, Gaston and Lincoln Counties that have seen average attendance climb to the top of Conference Carolinas. In 2012-13, Belmont Abbey was awarded best Division II promotion for that year's Play4Kay game.
Prior to his hiring at the Abbey, Rushing announced numerous conference championships (Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Basketball Tournament, Atlantic Sun Softball Championships, Big South Soccer and Baseball, A-10 Soccer) and has been the voice of the NCAA Southeast Region Volleyball Championship and Basketball Regionals. In 2013-14, Rushing was the public address voice for the OrthoCarolina Conference Carolinas Basketball Tournament, as well as numerous cross country and soccer championships. He has also handled announce duties for teams like the Gastonia Grizzlies, Hickory Crawdads, Forest City Owls, Furman Paladins, Charlotte 49ers and Clemson Tigers, as well as the Lenoir-Rhyne basketball and Wingate University football teams. He has twice been nominated for national awards at the college level.
His latest foray into pro baseball is his work as the lead public address announcer for the Greenville Drive, Class A affiliate of the 2013 World Champion Boston Red Sox.
A lifelong resident of Gaston County, Rushing is married to the former Jeanene Walker of Rockingham. Residents of Bessemer City, N.C, they are the proud parents of Bethany, a 2017 graduate of the Abbey, Mary Elizabeth, a junior at Belmont Abbey College and Rebekah, a junior at Piedmont Community Charter School.
