February 27, 2010 Jake Varilek Qualifies For NCAA National Tournament With Second Place Finish At 165 Pound ClassBelmont Abbey sophomore Jake Varilek qualified for the NCAA National tournament with a solid second place finish at the NCAA Super Regional, hosted by Pitt-Johnstown. Varilek finished 2-0 on Friday, the first-day of competition, to set up a semifinal match against nationally third-ranked Kyle Keane of Pitt-Johnstown this morning. Varilek upset Keane by a 6-4 score to propel him into the championship bout against top-seeded Josh Shields of Mercyhurst, where he lost 7-0. Varilek will next compete at the NCAA Division II championships, to be held March 12-13 at Sapp Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Nebraska-Omaha. |
